Video
My video work is centered around science and conservation issues. Film is an ideal medium to both highlight the aesthetic beauty of our public lands and convey the emotional resonance of these stories.
Rewilding the Night
I worked with a small team to produce this mini-doc in five days as part of the Jackson Wild Media Lab, an interdisciplinary filmmaking workshop for scientists and media creators. The film tells the story of scientists working in Grand Teton National Park to study the effects of red-hued, dark sky friendly lighting on wildlife, as well as its impact on how people experience the night sky. It screened at the International Wildlife Film Festival in spring 2020.
Dispatches from the Field Series
This is the pilot of a series intended to share the scientific stories of our National Parks (see the "Dispatches" page for more information). This episode addresses fire management and ecology through the lens of the Berry Fire, the largest fire in Grand Teton National Park’s history. The series has been distributed on Grand Teton's social media, and it is housed on their YouTube channel.
The Benefits of Hard Decisions: Applying Lessons from Wilderness Fire
I served as editor on this video, which is directed at line officers, park superintendents, and those making “go / no-go” decisions about wildland fires. The film is intended to spark discussion about how to support more fire on the landscape, and it draws on interviews conducted over several years with dozens of experts and pioneers in fire science and management.
Fire in the Mojave Desert: A Landscape in Transition
The Dome Fire, in 2020, burned over a million Joshua trees in the Mojave National Preserve. Will invasive plants take over, or will the native ecosystem be able to persist? I created this video in 2021 in collaboration with Joshua Tree National Park and Mojave Preserve.
Granite Desk Series
I worked with the education team at Joshua Tree National Park to create this series of educational videos aimed at students visiting the park for field trips, to either pre-load curriculum concepts or to follow up after their visit. Topics include camouflage, how wildlife adapt to the desert environment, the rain shadow effect, and the park’s geology. View the entire series on the park’s YouTube channel.
Balancing Conservation and Recreation in Greater Yellowstone
This project was conceived in collaboration with a local nonprofit, intended to complement their upcoming symposium on balancing conservation and recreation interests in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem.
Additional Work
Some of my work is not publicly available, but I can usually share them upon request—please reach out via my Contact page. These include short videos about the Lady Ranger Night program in Grand Teton, and a video about the park’s Visitor and Resource Protection division (i.e. law enforcement, search and rescue, dispatch, backcountry permits, wildland fire management, etc.).
